Solar PV Electricity – FAQs
Q: Will there be enough sunlight for Solar PV panels?
A: Solar power is generated using the intensity of light rather than direct sunlight. This means that even when it is overcast, your solar panels will be producing electricity.
Q: Is my roof strong enough to hold the weight of the panels?
A: Most roof structures are ‘over-engineered’ and are designed to take far more weight than the panels. If this is a particular concern, then we will check the existing roof structure and advise if an additional survey is required.
Q: Will my electrical system need changing?
A: We have qualified electricians who will assess the suitability of your system but usually only very minor upgrades are needed which can be done alongside the installation of the panels.
Q: Do I need planning permission?
A: In England and Scotland, planning permission is only required if you have a listed building or is in a conservation area or a World Heritage Site. If any of these conditions apply, then you should get in touch with your local planning authority.
Q: How long will the panels last?
A: The estimated life of the panels is over 30 years, with a guaranteed out-put for 25 years.
Q: Are the panels difficult to clean?
A: The good news is that the panels are self-cleaning!
Q: Can I work out how much I will save by converting to solar energy?
A:The Solar Energy Trust has a Solar Energy Calculator that you can use to work out how much you could generate and earn using the proposed new tariff.
You should be aware, however, that the amount of energy produced can vary over the course of the year, with more energy being produced in the summer months than the winter. We will do our best to give you a realistic estimate of what you can hope to generate when we conduct your initial assessment.
Q: Will I notice a difference in the quality of the electricity?
A: Your energy supply will remain the same, with the same quality and power as you currently receive. Your lights will glow just as bright and your washing machine will work just as well.
Q: Will future changes to the Feed-in Tariff affect my payments?
A: The Feed-in Tariff rate that is in force when you register your system is fixed for 25 years. So even if this rate fluctuates, the rate you are paid stays the same.
