Evacuated Solar Tubes – FAQs

Q: Do we get enough sun in the UK for the system to work?

A: Our evacuated tubes are designed for the UK climate. They use a ‘thermos flask’ principle, which allows the inside of the tubes to get very hot regardless of the external air temperature. Their efficiency is such that they heat water all year round, working even on cloudy days.

Q: Do I need planning permission?

A: In England, most solar hot water systems don’t need planning permission but it is always best to consult your local planning authority if you live in a listed building or are in a conservation area or World Heritage Site.

Q: Will the system provide all the hot water that I need?

A: The biggest ever study of solar water heating systems in the UK found that a properly installed system can provide 60% of your home’s hot water. The system could provide most of your hot water in the summer (April to September).

Q: What water temperatures can I expect?

A: This depends on the size of the cylinder you chose, and the amount of water you use. A smaller cylinder will be heated to higher temperatures, whereas a larger cylinder will heat more water, but not to the same extent. Systems are generally designed to heat water to 65C or so, although during the winter, it may be necessary to ‘top-up’ the heat on less sunny days using a conventional boiler.

Q: Will I need to have new hot water equipment?

A: We will do a complete assessment of your plumbing system as part of our free consultation service and if we find your hot water cylinder is not compatible then there are several options available to upgrade the existing cylinder or replace it entirely. Sometimes it is beneficial to replace old, inefficient equipment so that you get the most from your solar generated heat gain.

Q: How long will a solar hot water system last?

A:This depends on the quality of the system but a good system will easily last 25 years or more. HBH Solar only supplies quality systems believing that this offers greater value in the longer term.

Q: Will I have to do much to maintain the tubes?

A: The beauty of this system is that it is hassle-free with very low maintenance. It is also designed so that if a tube breaks then the whole system can still work and tubes can be replaced individually. The tubes themselves are self-cleaning.

Q: Will the tubes be damaged by very cold weather?

A: The solar panel is very well insulated and we add antifreeze to the system (non-toxic) to prevent damage.
